Environment Program

Protect, Conserve, Renew

Hurricanes, oil spills, and coastal erosion present unavoidable challenges to southeast Louisiana that foreshadow environmental quandaries elsewhere. Loyola University New Orleans offers its students a front row seat for community debates over the cost, effectiveness, and long-range consequences of engineering regional ecosystems.

The surrounding wetland, lake, river, and gulf estuaries provide unique opportunities for the exploration and study of natural resources. Urban New Orleans also surrounds the campus, offering students a place to explore dynamic cultural traditions of music, art, cuisine, gardens, and architecture celebrating the changing landscape.

Loyola’s Environment Program provides students with a broad and integrated study of the environment from a variety of academic viewpoints. As an interdisciplinary program, the curriculum represents courses from various colleges and departments that focus on understanding the relationships between humans and the natural world from biophysical, sociological, economic, literary, philosophical, and religious perspectives.

Blue

Programming

The Environment program hosts a variety of programs during the academic year designed to engage the entire Loyola community in environmental issues and to help improve sustainability efforts on campus. Environment students have the opportunity to participate and lead programming, gaining valuable field experience, meeting with experts in the industry, and making an impact in the New Orleans community.

Earth Week

Earth Week is a campus-wide celebration dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and sustainability. Throughout the week, students can participate in interactive events, educational activities, and hands-on experiences that highlight the importance of protecting our natural environment. It’s an opportunity to learn, get involved, and take meaningful action for a healthier, more sustainable future.

Environmental Justice Scholars

The Environmental Justice Scholars is an initiative to provide students with the opportunity to act as stewards of environmental justice! Funding from the Entergy Charitable Foundation will support five promising students to develop community engagement projects focused on improving environmental sustainability, resilience, and justice within the greater New Orleans area. Environmental Justice Scholars perform 45 hours of community service per semester and participate in numerous educational, social, and cultural activities each month.

Environmental Roundtable Series

Loyola’s Environmental Roundtables bring students, faculty, and community experts together for open conversations about today’s most pressing environmental issues. These discussions offer a collaborative space to share ideas, explore solutions, and deepen understanding of how environmental challenges impact our community and campus.

World Cleanup Day

World Cleanup Day brings the community together to take direct action in creating a cleaner campus and community. In partnership with local universities, students work side-by-side to clean up shared spaces and better understand the impact of waste in our community. It’s a meaningful way to support our environment and build community.

Environment Capstone Experience Walkthrough

The Environment Capstone Experience guides students through a culminating project of their coursework, fieldwork, and commitment to environmental stewardship. Students can also get hands-on experience from internships with local organizations. The finished capstone project will reflect students’ professional-level work, skills, and dedication to creating a more sustainable world.

National Recycle Day

National Recycle Day celebrates our campus’s commitment to reducing waste and protecting the planet. Students are encouraged to learn more about our on-campus recycling efforts, discover easy ways to make sustainable choices, and take part in reducing their environmental footprint.
