Achievements

Andrea Alarcon Uquillas (Biology '17) is currently engaged in stem cell and regenerative medicine research at LaCell, LLC., a bio-engineering-research company located in the New Orleans BioInnovation Center. LaCell provides a high quality stromal/stem cells to scientific investigators in the biotechnology sector. As a research technician, Andrea manages the production of stem cells and cell culture reagents and she is collaborating on new stem cell therapies.

Gauthier-St. Martin Eminent Scholar and Chair in Environmental Law Robert R. M. Verchick published an op-ed June 2018 for the Los Angeles Times that ran under the headline “Not Content with his War on Science, Scott Pruitt is Now Waging a War on Economics.” Click here for a read.

Dr. Kim Mix has been awarded an "Orthopedics in Action" grant from the Perry Initiative, a non-profit organization committed to building the pipeline for women in engineering and medicine. The grant will provide innovative orthopedics teaching materials for Dr. Mix to incorporate into her teaching and outreach activities. The "Orthopedics in Action" program is sponsored by Zimmer Biomet, a leading producer of prosthetic joints and orthopedic devices.

 

Vacationers heading to the Florida beaches will want to view WVUE Fox 8 News for a word of caution from Dr. Aimée Thomas.  Thomas spoke to the public about so-called “sea lice,” jellyfish larvae that can cause a sting when trapped beneath your bathing suit.

Gabriella Pucci ('19), a Psychology Pre-Med major, was awarded a $1500 summer research grant by Psi Chi, the International Honors Society in Psychology. Gabby received the award for the proposal, “The Effect of Punishment Sensitivity and Anxiety on the Development of Eating Disorder Behaviors in College Students."

In May 2018, certificates were awarded to 28 students from the greater New Orleans community who completed their program in Translation and Interpreting (Spanish/English). The celebration was lively, with family and friends in attendance. Dr. Lisbeth Philip presided, and she was aided by Dr. Uriel Quesada, acting Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Former undergraduate students from our department also received this award, including Martin Better (Latin American Studies/Classical Studies 2016, and Stephanie MacClellan (Spanish 2016).
