Department of Biological Sciences

Engaging Students in the Study of Life

Biology provides a supportive and inclusive learning environment that promotes a deeper understanding of major biological principles and concepts; that develops critical thinking, quantitative, and communication skills; that instills a life-long interest in learning; and that prepares graduates for rewarding and productive careers in the medical and life sciences. The Department provides students with experiences, training, and tools needed to critically evaluate existing and emerging knowledge and to contribute to this body of knowledge. Towards this end, the Department is committed to supporting original faculty research and scholarship in collaboration with students.

Studying Bugs in a Black Light

Academic Programs

Biology consists of many disciplines unified by the fact that all plants, animals, and microorganisms follow the same fundamental laws of heredity, reproduction, growth, development, self-maintenance, interaction, and response. Loyola’s biology program provides the academic foundation for diverse career opportunities in the medical and life sciences.

Research

Biology engages students in the study of life through active learning in the classroom and through collaborative research in the laboratory and field. Perhaps the most necessary skills of a biologist are an inquisitive outlook and enthusiastic curiosity.
