Dr. John McCarthy, S.J. Lectures on Contemplative Ecology
The Rev. Dr. John McCarthy, S.J., a member of the English Canadian province, gave a presentation titled “Contemplative Ecology” on Thursday, December 4th. Father McCarthy currently serves as the Coordinator of the English Canadian Province's Justice Reconciliation and Ecology Commission.
His presentation focused on the need to include the contemplative or religious/spiritual dimensions of nature when approaching ecological issues in order to bring a wholeness to a discussion on the environment. He earned his Ph.D. in Boreal Forest Ecology from the University of British Columbia and is the author of the book Do Monkeys Go to Heaven? Finding God in All Creation. Professors Anne Daniell (Department of Religious Studies) and Joel MacClellan (Department of Philosophy and the Director of Loyola’s Environment Program) were the respondents.
This event was sponsored by the Rev. Stephen J. Duffy chair in Catholic Studies, The Rev. Dr. R. Bentley Anderson, S.J., and the Canizaro Center for Catholic Studies.
