Dr. MacClellan Answers the Question “What are Species?” in New Publication

 Dr. Joel MacClellan (Department of Philosophy, Environment Program) has a new publication, “The Species of Species Pluralism”, in the peer-reviewed journal Studies in History and Philosophy of Science (forthcoming here Oct 2026 in Vol. 119). Dr. MacClellan provides perhaps the most extensive analysis to date of pluralism about the 30+ definitions of “species” in the literature. MacClellan argues for a novel form of pluralism, hybrid pluralism, which is a broadly phylogenetic species concept, but which takes seriously asexual taxa and indeterminate biological situations. SHPS is a top-25 journal of 312 ranked philosophy journals.
