Achievements

Dr. Paul W. Barnes, J.H. Mullahy Endowed Chair in Environmental Biology, recently attended a meeting of the UNEP Environmental Effects Assessment Panel in Malaga, Spain from February 13-21, 2018 to prepare a quadrennial report on the environmental effects of ozone depletion and climate change.  Dr. Barnes is a co-lead author in the terrestrial ecosystems working group which includes 6 other authors.  A draft report was produced at the meeting in Malaga with a final report to be prepared at a follow-up meeting in Vermont in September.  While at the meeting Dr.

In January 2018, at the President's Convocation, Dr. Eileen J. Doll received the Excellence in Community Engaged Teaching Award. This is presented to the instructor who best connects the Service Learning in her/his classroom with the outside community. Dr. Doll's class, SPAN A404, Inmigración, was evaluated with a perfect score.

Dr. Armin Kargol, Professor of Physics and the Chair of the Physics Department, has received the 2018 University Senate Award for Excellence in Teaching. He was also recognized for his teaching in 2015 when he received the College of Humanities and Natural Sciences Excellence in Teaching award.

80 high school students networked and learned from leading journalism educators at Louisiana Journalism Education Association’s annual conference and the annual Tom Bell Silver Scribe Contest hosted by the Loyola School of Mass Communication in February 2018.

Attending the conference on Thursday, Feb 1 2018, students learned from leading journalists — and heard the results of a recent JEA writing competition, in which Luc Herbet from St.Paul’s School was announced as the top journalism student in the state, winning a full tuition scholarship to Loyola.

Loyola Physics students Anna Smith, Kennedi Turner, Ariel Hall, and Sandrine Ferrans attended the annual Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics, CUWiP, held in Jacksonville, Fl, in January 2018.

Professor and Loyola Chair of Environmental Communication Bob Thomas appeared Saturday, Jan. 28 in "Christmas trees come to the rescue in coastal Louisiana," an evening news feature on NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, the most-watched evening newscast in America. 

Dr. Martin McHugh was interviewed on WDSU TV Morning News about the "blue moon" phenomenon occurring on Wednesday, January 31 in the morning hours.

Dra. Josefa Salmón received the Dux Academicus award at the January 2018 President's Convocation. This is the highest faculty award presented by Loyola University New Orleans. It is given to honor her achievements in scholarship, teaching, and service.
