Joel MacClellan, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy, has taken over as Editor-in-Chief of the Animal & Society Institute's Sloth: Journal of Emerging Voices in Human-Animal Studies, the top HAS undergraduate journal.
Philosophy and History double major, Political Science minor Thanh Mai has won a Fulbright award at the Universiteit Hasselt in Belgium during the 2018-2019 academic year. After she completes her time in Belgium, she will begin graduate work in philosophy at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary. Congratulations, Thanh!
Dr. Christopher Schaberg, an award-winning writer and the Dorothy Harrell Brown Distinguished Professor of English at Loyola University New Orleans, has a new book out titled "The Work of Literature in an Age of Post-Truth." In the book, he argues that humanities professors shouldn't apologize for their passions or their commitments -- either in their research or their teaching.

Dr. Kim Mix has been awarded an "Orthopedics in Action" grant from the Perry Initiative, a non-profit organization committed to building the pipeline for women in engineering and medicine. The grant will provide innovative orthopedics teaching materials for Dr. Mix to incorporate into her teaching and outreach activities. The "Orthopedics in Action" program is sponsored by Zimmer Biomet, a leading producer of prosthetic joints and orthopedic devices.
Andrea Alarcon Uquillas (Biology '17) is currently engaged in stem cell and regenerative medicine research at LaCell, LLC., a bio-engineering-research company located in the New Orleans BioInnovation Center. LaCell provides a high quality stromal/stem cells to scientific investigators in the biotechnology sector. As a research technician, Andrea manages the production of stem cells and cell culture reagents and she is collaborating on new stem cell therapies.

Gabriella Pucci ('19), a Psychology Pre-Med major, was awarded a $1500 summer research grant by Psi Chi, the International Honors Society in Psychology. Gabby received the award for the proposal, “The Effect of Punishment Sensitivity and Anxiety on the Development of Eating Disorder Behaviors in College Students."

In May 2018, certificates were awarded to 28 students from the greater New Orleans community who completed their program in Translation and Interpreting (Spanish/English). The celebration was lively, with family and friends in attendance. Dr. Lisbeth Philip presided, and she was aided by Dr. Uriel Quesada, acting Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Former undergraduate students from our department also received this award, including Martin Better (Latin American Studies/Classical Studies 2016, and Stephanie MacClellan (Spanish 2016).
