ENVA's Dr. Frank Jordan, chair of Biological Sciences and director of the Fish Slayer Laboratory at Loyola, provided expert advice to the Times-Picayune on the effect that biocontamination has on catfish in the Mississippi river, and whether they are safe to eat or not.
Dr. Cody Melcher and Dr. Annie McGlynn-Wright have joined the Sociology Department. Dr. Melcher joined the faculty of Loyola University New Orleans in 2022 after receiving his Ph.D. in sociology from the City University of New York. His research broadly examines the intersection of class and race, specifically the effect of economic well-being on public opinion and political behavior.
Michael Kammer graduated from Loyola in 2012 with a BS in Physics. He went on to pursue a PhD at Vanderbilt University in Biomedical Engineering. He then completed a postdoc in Chemistry at Vanderbilt University and then another in Pulmonary medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is now a Research Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where his research focus is on early detection of lung cancer.
Congratulations to our Alumni Bryan Whittington and Destiny Karash-Givens! They have recently been employed at Tulane University as program managers. They get to do fun things like new student orientation, programs/event management, and helping freshman get acclimated to their new life on campus. Taiyah Murphy ENVH’24 recently completed a Sustainability Leaders Workshop through Bard University. The C2C Fellows Network, is a program offered through the Graduate Programs in Sustainability at Bard College in New York. It is an international network for undergraduate and graduate students aspiring to leadership work in sustainable politics, NGO’s and business.
C2C stands for Campus to Community, and to Companies, to Congress, to Corporations, to Capitol, or to City Hall.
David Zelaya PSYC'12 has been selected as the 2022 Young Alumnus of the Year. This award honors one young alumnus who has given most generously of their time, talent, and philanthropy to their alma mater and community.
After graduating from Loyola with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Psychology, David pursued his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Georgia State University.

Tim Cahill, Associate Professor of Religious Studies, has been awarded a prestigious fellowship funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The award of $35,000 is administered by the American Institute of Indian Studies and allows him to pursue his research on 17th-century Sanskrit poetry in India for seven months. The research proposal has been approved by the Government of India, allowing Cahill to receive a research visa and an affiliation with Banaras Hindu University during his time in India.
Dr. Catherine Wessinger, Rev. H. James Yamauchi, S.J. Professor of the History of Religions, has published a new book Theory of Women in Religions. It was published by NYU Press, and is regarded as a major achievement in the field.
Classical Studies professor, Dr. Wayne Rupp, was elected President of the Louisiana Classical Association in 2022.

Congratulations to our Loyola Psychological Sciences alum Erika Rajo, '09 for being apart of the Gambit's 40 Under 40 class of 2022 list. She is currently the director of the University Medical Center Trauma Recovery Clinic and co-director of the Spirit of Charity Trauma Center Psychiatry Research Unit in New Orleans.
