Allie Belcher, Environmental Studies minor, is spending the spring semester at the St. Eustatia Center for Archaeological Research in the Caribbean going out into the field and digging in areas to find artifacts that can tell us something about the history of the island. Once they properly collected artifacts, they then catalogue them by recording their context and identifying each item. From there, they can either reaffirm what is known about St. Eustatius’ history or create a new story altogether.

Loyola English graduate Weldon Ryckman has a short story at Terrain.org that was a finalist in its recent 10th annual fiction contest. Go Weldon!

Every year, Loyola's undergraduate students travel to the Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP). This annual conference, organized by the American Physical Society,  takes place in January on various campuses across the country. Our students present their research and participate in various activities.

Dr. Mark Yakich received the Dux Academicus award at the January 2020 President's Convocation. This is the highest faculty award presented by Loyola University New Orleans. It honors achievements in scholarship, teaching, and service.

Dr. Elin Grissom was honored with the "University Senate Award for Excellence in Research" at the Spring 2020 President Convocation on January 17. Her accomplishments leading up to the award include her ongoing research in stress, hormones, learning, and memory, as well as the publication of her most recent two peer-reviewed papers over the last year and seventeen research-related papers she has written over the past few years. Congratulations Dr. Grissom!

The recipient of this year’s University Senate award for service is Dr.

On the 17th of January, Dr. Kate Yurgil was honored with Marquette Fellowship for her project focused on integrating behavioral and neuroimaging techniques to investigate whether PTG is associated with neural differences in emotional processing that may underlie altruistic behavior and for providing a basis for understanding positive outcomes following trauma. Congratulations Dr. Yurgil!

Dr. Armin Kargol has published the second volume of a book "Introduction to Cellular Biophysics", titled "From Membrane Transport to Neural Signalling". This volume, together with Part One, "Membrane Transport Mechanisms" will be used in a course PHYS A436 "Cellular Biophysics" which Dr. Kargol will teach in Fall'20.

Sidney Williams, ENVB ‘20 is currently working on a research project investigating the effects of
silicate concentrations of growth of a diatom, Skeletonema costatum, in a defined media. The
motivation to produce a media alternative to the universal, nutrient-rich media, is to more accurately
monitor the growth of diatoms based on the chemistry of the water from where they were collected.
The organisms found within Lake Pontchartrain have adapted to thrive with the proportion of

Dr. Phil Bucolo is an aquatic community ecologist with a primary focus on lower food web dynamics
specifically algal and aquatic plant ecophysiology and biogeochemical processes. He is interested in the
environmental processes that drive organismal interactions and how those interactions affect aquatic
community ecology. His lab is currently involved in a number of research endeavors that include
undergraduate collaboration. Loyola biochemistry major Jared Chan and Dr. Bucolo are quantifying
