Teacher Certification Update

A Message from Jane Chauvin, Ph.D., Director of Teacher Certification

Loyola’s Teacher Certification program has reached some important milestones. On October 16, 2013, Loyola was awarded Level I status by the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) and the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE), thus allowing us to start offering courses in teacher education leading to a LouisianaJane-Chauvin-Director-Teacher-Certification-Loyola-University-New-Orleans Teaching Certificate. On October 15, 2014 we were notified that we had completed our probationary year and were allowed to submit documentation to permit us to move to Level II, which we did in record time.

On January 13, 2015, LDOE and BESE unanimously approved our Level II application, with no recommendations and no revisions. This means that Loyola University New Orleans can now recommend its graduates for teacher certification and is recognized as a state accredited teacher education program. This is the same level of recognition that we had prior to Hurricane Katrina.

The program continues to surpass initial projections. Our target was to enroll ten committed students in the first year of the program. In only the third semester of offering courses, we have more than twenty-five such students seeking certification. This semester's focus-area courses both have in excess of 20 students in each section. We are off to a great start!
