Jess L. “Jay” Matherne III, Ph.D. joined the Department of Psychological Sciences at Loyola University New Orleans in August 2022.  Born and raised in New Orleans, Dr. Matherne received his B.S. in Psychology (minor: Sociology) from Tulane University in 1990, his M.S. in Applied Developmental Psychology from the University of New Orleans in 1993, and his Ph.D. in Applied Developmental Psychology from the University of New Orleans in 1997. Dr. Matherne’s graduate work included an externship on the Children’s Unit at Southeast Louisiana State Hospital in Mandeville. Additionally, he worked in child residential care facilities in New Orleans as Program Therapist and Clinical Director from 1996-2002. Dr. Matherne testified often in Juvenile Court to advocate for children in state custody.  Dr. Matherne taught undergraduate psychology courses at the University of New Orleans from 2004-2022.

At Loyola, Dr. Matherne has taught Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Research, Statistics and Methods, Developmental Psychology, Educational Psychology, and Child Psychology. 

He taught Introductory Psychology, Experimental Design and Statistics, Social Psychology, Psychology of Personal Adjustment, History of Modern Psychology, Psychology of Learning, Introduction to Industrial and Personnel Psychology, Sensation and Perception, Clinical Psychology, Introductory Statistics, Introduction to Forensic Psychology, Psychological Tests and Measurement, Human Sexuality, Comparative Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Child Psychology at the University of New Orleans. 

Dr. Matherne enjoys distance running, including marathons and ultramarathons, road biking, swimming, golf, and strength training.
