Awards

We are asking students to participate in nominating their peers for various Department of Psychological Sciences' Awards being given at the annual College of Arts and Sciences Convocation in the spring. Below are descriptions of the four (4) awards. You may nominate yourself or other students for one or more of the awards, or you may ask your advisor or any other full-time faculty member to nominate you. December graduates are eligible to receive awards in the Spring following their graduation. The faculty will deliberate and vote on the nominees for these awards. Recipients will receive a commemorative plaque at the annual Honors Convocation. If you are interested in being nominated, please email the department chair.

Outstanding Research Award

The purpose of this award is to recognize excellence in undergraduate student research. It is assumed that research of this quality would be suitable for presentation at a regional psychology meeting or as an undergraduate research thesis, although neither of these are requirements for consideration. While faculty supervision is required, and faculty input assumed, the research done and the manuscript submitted must have been planned, executed, and written by the submitting undergraduate student.  Selection of the award recipient will be based on a review of a completed research paper, which will be judged by department faculty and, when possible, by reviewers outside of the department.

Distinguished Student of Psychology Award

This award is presented to the senior who has most distinguished himself or herself while at Loyola University. A Loyola and Psychology GPA of at least 3.00 is required.

Criteria Include:

  1. Department Involvement: Nominees must have been visible in the Department, attainable through being a student assistant, an officer in a student organization (Psi Chi or Psychology Club), a representative of the department, involved in recruiting or mentoring, assisting in class and/or laboratories, or other forms of work outside regular class involvement.
  2. Professional Activities: Evidence of professional involvement includes being involved in research, presenting a paper at a conference, organizing a session at a conference, and/or conference attendance.

Distinguished Professional Service Award

This award is given to the student that has exemplified, in an outstanding fashion, the service oriented features of professional behavior.

  1. Rationale for the Award: The essential justification for this award is the view that Psychology represents a discipline/profession concerned with explaining, predicting, and controlling behavior in the context of a value orientation that reflects an ongoing concern for the well-being of others.
  2. Eligibility: All Psychology majors are eligible.
  3. Criteria: Nominees should be engaged in Psychology functions and/or settings external to the department, which provide an alternate forum for service (e.g., LUCAP, Campus Ministry, etc.)

Dr. Paddy Ann Doll, Senior Academic Achievement Award

This award is given in honor of the career-long commitment to the academic and professional excellence manifested by Dr. Paddy Ann Doll, former professor of Psychology. Only seniors are eligible for this award. This award must be given to a senior who has earned the highest Loyola GPA by February 1st of the designated academic year. The recipient of this award will be determined by the Chairperson of the Department of Psychological Sciences in consultation with the Registrar's Office and the College of Humanities and Natural Sciences.
