Loyola's Department of English

Loyola's Department of English offers a diverse curriculum in literature, rhetoric, critical theory, creative writing, non fiction and professional writing, linguistics, digital media, and film history. Students receive a strong foundation in classical and contemporary works, with writing style and skills emphasized in every course.

Dr. Hillary Eklund wins the CAS Faculty Excellence in Advising Award in 2022 while Dr. Chris Schaberg has articles published about student learning during the pandemic

Provost Distinguished Professor of English, Dr. Hillary Eklund, won the College of Arts and Sciences Faculty Excellence in Advising Award for 2022. Meanwhile, Dorothy Harrell Brown Distinguished Professor of English and Director of the Center for Editing and Publishing, Dr. Christopher Schaberg, penned the article, "Quitting Academic Twitter" for Inside Higher Education this May.

Student-run Literary Journal Meraki publishes its third edition

Loyola’s new student-run literary journal MERAKI has published its third edition! Meraki is a modern Greek term for what happens when you leave a piece of your soul, creativity, or love in your work. The journal includes visual arts and creative writing submissions from Loyola students.

Dr. Heinecke gives talk at the American Chemical Society National Meeting

Dr. Heinecke was selected to give a research talk to a national audience at the ACS meeting in New Orleans this March. She spoke on the "Role of alkali metal counterions on size of para-mercaptobenzoic acid capped gold clusters." Co-authors include Loyola students Elysse June, Elisse Ward-Dones, Noor F. Cheema, and Sarah G. McMahon. Congratulations, Dr. Heinecke!

Francesca Vaccaro Receives 2016 Ignatian Award for Outstanding Senior Woman

Graduating senior Francesca Vaccaro was the proud recipient of the 2016 Ignatian Award for Outstanding Senior Woman. 

The Ignatian Awards are given each year to three individuals–one man, one woman, and one graduate student–who have set themselves apart by university involvement, representing Loyola with honor and distinction, living a strong faith, and maintaining a high GPA.
