Biology Alumna and Adjutor Hominum Awardee  Vanessa Rouzier, M.D. ('98) is co-first author on a landmark study demonstrating the effectiveness of a new oral cholera vaccine protocol in protecting people from the epidemic cholera. This is an important finding to help stop a terrible cholera epidemic that hit Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, likely brought in by relief workers.

The study was conducted at: Groupe Haïtien d'Etude du Sarcome de Kaposi et des Infections Opportunistes (GHESKIO) cholera treatment center, targeting the ~70,000 inhabitants living in the adjacent slums. [See details in the article]. Nearly 100,000 patients were vaccinated. Follow up for 37 months postvaccination (April 2012–April 30, 2015) revealed very high efficacy of this vaccine protocol in conjunction with an integrated package of cholera control measures.
