The creation of the Documentary and Oral History Studio would not have been possible without the generostiy of community donors who believe in our mission. We believe that the Studio reflects the core values of Loyola University in both its pursuit of publicly-engaged scholarship and the education of students in intellectual, ethical, and technical challenges of historical scholarship in the digital age.
Donations to the Studio help support a variety of activities, but by far the most important of these is that it enables our student workers to "earn while they learn." As part of their employment in the studio, Loyola students are responsible for the transcription, proofreading, and archiving of oral history interviews. As we grow, they will also learn to shoot and edit documentary features. The technological mastery that they acquire in the Studio will make Loyola students more competitive in today's intellectual marketplace.
Although we believe in employing the latest technology where it is appropriate, the Studio's philosophy is to use a minimum amount of equipment necessary to its fullest extent. In a field where innovation is the rule, we endeavor to retire equipment because it is worn out from recording and editing amazing footage rather than from growing obsolete. As our library of interviews grows, so, too, do our storage demands. Your support helps us preserve the library of interviews that we film.
Your generosity also makes the studio more competitive for grants from both government agencies and private foundations. In today's economy, granting agencies increasingly prefer to see applicants "match" funds requested. Donations from individuals and companies enable us to seek such funding.
