Mary Kate Delaney discusses the Pope

Mary Kate Delaney, a senior in History, will be heading off next month to the Phi Alpha Theta conference at Northwestern State University to present a paper entitled “A Pope of Great Words: Innocent III and His Writings.” Mary Kate’s work on Pope Innocent III is far from your standard political history. Not only does she cover the ambitious career that brought this pope into political entanglements (that he subsequently won) with almost every major leader in thirteenth-century Europe, but she also delves into his political strategy: the creation of the term “vicar of Christ,” a frenzy of diplomatic letters employing just the right tone and language to accomplish his goals. Her insightful work will surely be well received. Mary Kate is also hard at work on her History Honors Thesis, which she hopes to present next December.
