Shannon is a student, a scholar and a selfless person.
Andrew has worked in the Thomas lab in a research capacity since his freshman year. First as a volunteer assistant on other projects, then eventually co-developing projects to finally, developing his own novel research based on his interests in the environment, dragonflies and aquatic systems.
Dr. Thomas has surpassed what it means to teach with excellence. In the classroom, she strives to provide students with content in a manner that is both engaging and easy to understand. She has pioneered many courses, including BioInquiry and Foundations of Environmental Science that include curriculums designed to adequately prepare first-year students with the skills essential to a career in science.
Congratulations, Shannon! The committee for the Monroe Library Student Research Contest has selected Shannon's research project, "Impact of Urban Park Management on Ground Dwelling Spider Communities" as the winner in the senior thesis category for this year's contest. This award comes with a $200 prize. The committee enjoyed reading both her research process and her finished paper -- fantastic work!
Students Tamera and Tia Blackstone of New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics High School partnered with Dr.
ENVA Professor Dr. Philip Bucolo is an aquatic biologist and a visiting assistant professor at Loyola University. He appeared in an article in The New Orleans Advocate about an acidic lake atop a gypsum pile in Convent, LA. The article is titled "Risk falling for potential environmental disaster from slipping waste pile, Mosaic officials say" by David Mitchell. In the article, Dr. Bucolo gave insight into how high acidity levels would impact freshwater plants.

Dr. Barnes has been actively involved in a European association specifically dedicated to the study of UV radiation and plants (UV4Plants). He is currently on the Editorial Board and also serves on the society’s Managing Committee. Just this past April a meeting was held in Bled, Slovenia, which is situated in the Alps.
