Vacationers heading to the Florida beaches will want to view WVUE Fox 8 News for a word of caution from Dr. Aimée Thomas.  Thomas spoke to the public about so-called “sea lice,” jellyfish larvae that can cause a sting when trapped beneath your bathing suit.

Dr. Paul W. Barnes, J.H. Mullahy Endowed Chair in Environmental Biology, and Dr. Susanne Neugart, Postdoctoral Researcher in Biology, recently attended a network meeting of the International Association of Plant UV Research (UV4Plants) held in Bled, Slovenia from April 15-18.  Scientists and students from 20 countries (mostly in Europe) attended this conference to learn about recent research aimed at better understanding how ultraviolet radiation in sunlight influences plants and ecosystems.  Dr.

The Society for the History of Technology is dedicated to the historical study of technology and its relations with politics, economics, labor, business, the environment, public policy, science, and the arts. SHOT is an international organization that actively works to foster a stronger global community for the study of the history of technology and to support a worldwide network of scholars in this field. We welcome as members people from any country who are interested in the history of technology, broadly defined.

A moment of reflection

In New Orleans, summer is a time when life generally slows down as the heat, humidity and afternoon thunderstorms settle in and it becomes less than comfortable to pursue vigorous outdoor activities. Thus, in this part of the world, summer is a good time to relax, eat and drink good food and beverages, and ponder (Figure 1.1).
