College of Arts and Sciences New Programs

Masters of Arts in Teaching Program

Dr. Glenda Hembree, the Director of Teacher Education at Loyola, says that, put simply, “We need teachers!” With the first course starting this fall, the new MAT Program seeks to provide a teaching education for those hoping to retool themselves – even if they graduated without a Teaching Certificate. After 36 hours of courses and a 2-semester long internship, successful students of the program receive both a Master’s degree and a Teaching Certification in 6-12th grade education. Degree in Translation and Interpreting

After the success of the Translation and Interpreting Certificate program that began in 2013, the College of Arts and Sciences will begin offering a Bachelor’s Degree in Translation and Interpreting in the fall of 2017. Dr. Lisbeth Philip, the Director of the program, emphasizes the importance and the need for language access in everything from the court systems to hospitals and that students of this program provide a much-needed service. Students will engage in internship hours and community engagement, partnering with varying groups in the New Orleans area.  For more information click here.

International Studies

Within the History major, students can now declare a concentration in International Studies. Dr. Thum, one of the history professors who helped craft the concentration proposal, explains that the need grew out of increasing student interest in learning about different sections of the world. With this concentration, then, students are required to focus their energies on a specific region of the world (i.e., Latin America, the Middle East), and take specified History courses and course in other departments that focus on these regions. While internships and studying abroad are not required, Dr. Thum explains, they naturally are encouraged and add a hands-on element to the concentration.  To find out more, click here.

Computer Information Systems

A year old now, the Computer Information Systems major is continuing to grow exponentially. The program, as described by Dr. Scott McDermott, is a unique degree that combines important aspects of computer science and business. The degree allows students to gain real world programming experience by working through internships in the New Orleans community and embarking on exciting projects, such as learning to design mobile apps.  Learn more about Computer Information Systems here.

Additionally, two new degrees will be offered starting in the Fall of 2017: Computer Science (COSC) and Computer Science with Game Programming Track (CSGP). These degrees, too, will provide students with the theoretical understanding necessary to navigate these ever-growing fields, as well as the practical experience to full enhance their education. More information about these new degrees will be available soon.
