Study Abroad

Faculty and students in the Department of Biological Sciences travel around the world to study and engage in research. Please note the following about studying biology abroad:

  • Tropical Ecology BIOL A106 is typically offered during spring semesters. Regular class meetings are held on campus during the semester and then students participate in a two week field trip to Belize and Guatemala immediately after graduation. The field trip includes visits to tropical seasonal forests, tropical rain forests, savannas, atolls, and coral reefs. A central focus of the trip is to gain a full appreciation for the biological diversity of tropical ecosystems and roughly equal amounts of time are spent exploring terrestrial and marine habitats. We also learn quite a bit about the history and culture of Mesoamerica. Contact Dr. Jordan to learn more about this trip.
  • Biology faculty engage in ecological and parasitological research in places such as Hawaii, Mexico, Central America, and Hawaii. Visit our faculty web pages to learn more about these research opportunities.
  • Loyola students can take summer courses and do research in coastal Louisiana and beyond through the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON).
  • The Organization of Tropical Studies (OTS) is committed to making training in tropical biology part of the experience of students and professionals, both in the field of biology as well as in other disciplines. OTS offers courses for undergraduate students, graduate students, professionals and the general public in English, Spanish and Portuguese. In addition to traditional courses in tropical biology, OTS also offers courses and training in conservation biology, environmental policy, and in natural history.
  • Finally, make sure you visit the Center for International Education website to learn more about study abroad opportunities at Loyola University.
