Kori Doran, BIOL ’20, has been accepted into the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) at UCLA/Charles R. Drew University. This is a free summer program for freshman and sophomore college students interested in the health professions and provides an opportunity to gain exposure to various health professions through shadowing, lectures and lab simulations. The program is hosted by doctors from various backgrounds who give advice on how to succeed in the world of medicine while learning about the healthcare issues within the underserved community of Los Angeles. SHPEP’s goal is to successfully prepare students for health professions schools and to strengthen the career development of students who are underrepresented in the health professions. In addition, they will participate in a community-based health fair to create awareness of issues and in between seminars and clinical exposure from nearby medical centers, they will tour the city and enjoy off time.
