Dr. Paul W. Barnes, Professor and Rev. John H. Mullahy, SJ Endowed Chair in Environmental Biology recently published a paper entitled "Adjustments in epidermal UV-transmittance of leaves in sun-shade transitions" in the journal Physiologia Plantarum. This research is the culmination of seven years of study that addresses how rapidly and to what degree sun and shade leaves in plants can adjust their UV sunscreens to sudden changes in their UV environment which occurs in various situations in plant canopies. Loyola undergraduates assisted with this research, including working at study sites in Hawaii!
