NURS 361: Professional Nursing Practice introduces the philosophy and organizing concepts of the School of Nursing and the mission, purpose, goals, objectives, and outcomes of the BSN Program. Emphasis is given to the art and science of professional nursing practice with particular attention devoted to nursing theory. The various and emerging roles of the professional nurse are discussed in considerable depth. No prerequisites.
NURS 365: Health Assessment includes didactic and clinical laboratory learning activities. The course focuses on the appraisal of the health of individuals in all phases of the life cycle. This course may be challenged by examination. No prerequisites.
NURS 377: Nursing Leadership: Behaviors and Process is a theory course which emphasizes various aspects of leadership and management roles in the contemporary health care environment. Considerable attention is devoted to the fundamentals of change theory and to the processes involved in implementing planned change. Prerequisite: NURS 361. This course may be challenged by examination.
NURS 450: Introduction to Nursing Research provides an overview of the research process. The focus of the course is developing skill in reading and evaluating research for the purpose of determining applicability to nursing practice. This course builds on knowledge of nursing theory and highlights the importance of an appropriate
theoretical/conceptual framework for research. Prerequisites: NURS 361 and HOD 260 Elementary Statistics.
NURS 457: Health PromotionThrough the Life Cycle is a theory course that focuses on the nursing role in health promotion and disease prevention with clients (individuals and families) throughout the life cycle. Emphasis is given to the exploration of effect teaching-learning strategies to affect the health and well being of clients. The nurse’s role as health promoter/client teacher, introduced in NURS 361, is greatly expanded in this course. Prerequisite: NURS 361.
NURS 471: Community Health Nursing is a theory course that emphasizes the health promotion and disease prevention of aggregates within the community. Highlighting the professional nurse’s role introduced in NURS 361, NURS 471 focuses on the broadened scope of caring for the community as client. Prerequisite: NURS 361.
NURS 473: Comprehensive Integrated Practicum is a practicum course that focuses on nursing interventions for an aggregate within the community. Faith-based communities of all denominations are used as practicum sites within which to conduct practicum activities. Students work in a group to design individualized practicum experiences based on established guidelines. Pre/corequisites: NURS 361, NURS 377, NURS 457 and NURS 471.
Nursing Elective: A required nursing elective of choice is part of the nursing curriculum. No prerequisites. (See page 17 of this Handbook for information related to advanced placement credit for this elective.)
