The 42nd Annual Dawson Gaillard Writing Contest
Awards will be given in the following categories:
- Essays – scholarly or general
- Poetry
- Fiction
- Scripts – film, radio, TV, theatre
Deadline for Submissions: Friday, March 17, 2023
To submit an entry, send an email to hbraden@loyno.edu.
Instructions for submitting an entry via email:
The email should contain the following information:
(1) the contestant’s full name,
(2) the title of the submission, and
(3) the category in which it is entered.
Guidelines for submitting entries:
- Attach the submission as a PDF file.
- Do NOT include your name on the file, but DO make sure the entry has a title that matches the one in your email.

Students are allowed to submit one piece per category.
You will receive a brief confirming email notifying you that your entry has been received.
Eligibility:
- Entrants must be currently enrolled at Loyola.
- Entries must be sent from a valid Loyno address.
- Entries must consist of material not previously published, except for scripts that may have been performed in a classroom context. Class assignments may be submitted but must be retyped. Written comments by the teacher must be omitted.
- Entries in more than one category are permitted; however, each entry must be via a separate email and attachment. In the case of entries consisting of a group of short poems, those may be included in one PDF file.
- Emails not conforming to the above may not be considered.
Assignment of Rights
Your entry email constitutes your acceptance of the following terms: You agree that your entry is the property of the Loyola English department to be used as the department wishes. However, the department will release the entry for subsequent publication upon request.
