About English

Critical thinking and practical experiences

The Department of English offers small classes taught by award-winning professors, who help students to think and read critically, to write coherently, and to understand a variety of periods, genres, media, and cultures. In the English major, students choose from one of three concentrations: literature, writing, or film and digital media. The department also offers a Certificate in Editing & Publishing, and a route to earning certification for teaching at the elementary and secondary levels.

English majors have the opportunity to receive practical experience by working in the Center for Editing and Publishing as well as on a number of publications, including the international journal New Orleans Review and the Object Lessons book seriesStudents also have the possibility of interning outside the university at magazines, businesses, schools, and online services, in preparation for meaningful, rewarding professional lives.
