Loyola recognizes that students, as a result of study or experience, may possess mastery of the content of certain college courses. To enable students to profit from their knowledge, Loyola allows students to receive credit or a waiver of requirements through departmental or external examinations. The maximum number of credits that a student may earn through departmental or external examinations is 30. See the Loyola University Undergraduate Bulletin, section on “Academic Regulations”, for more information about external examinations that are accepted by Loyola as well as required minimum scores.
Advanced Placement Credit for the Nursing Elective
The faculty of the School of Nursing allows students with advanced certification to receive AP credit (advanced placement) for the three credit-hour nursing elective. Note, however, that the 3 credits earned by advanced placement may not be used to satisfy the 30 credit-hour Loyola residency requirement.
To receive the AP credit for advanced certification the following criteria must be met:
- The certification must be current as of the semester it is presented for credit.
- The certification must be from one of the professional nursing organizations referenced in the annual supplemental career-guide to the January issue of AJN. The same list may also be found on the web site: http://nursingcenter.com. Once on this web site, type “specialty certification” in the search box and you will be directed to a list of all acceptable certifications.
- The student must present original certification documentation (certificate and/or letter of certification) to his/her faculty advisor or School Director or along with a copy of the same document. Faculty who see the original document will sign and date the copy to indicate that the originals have been seen. Staff members are not authorized to verify the documentation provided.
- Obtain a copy of the “Application for Advanced Placement Credit for the BSN Nursing Elective” form from the Nursing Office or download the form from the BSN Student Site on Blackboard. Submit the application form to the Nursing Office as directed.
