Loyola Lagniappe Parent Schedule - August 23 & 24, 2010

Day 1 - Monday, August 23, 2010

8:00 - 11:00 a.m. CHECK–IN
Location: Danna Student Center, St. Charles Room
Check-in for Loyola Lagniappe. Students may take their Loyola University I.D. card photo from 8:00 a.m. - 11:00
a.m. with Card Services in the Claiborne Room, Danna Student Center.

PLACEMENT TESTING
Time and Location: Check your student’s registration information sheet to see what placement test(s), if any, he/
she has been scheduled to take and when and where to report. Please note that the placement tests time may
conflict with another scheduled activity. Your student should report directly to the placement test at his/her
scheduled time and report to the other activity once he/she have completed placement testing. English reports
to Bobet 214; Spanish, French and German to Bobet 100, Greek and Latin to Bobet 114; and History to Bobet 216.

11:00 - 11:30 a.m. WELCOME TO LOYOLA AND STUDENT AFFAIRS PANEL
Location: Monroe Hall, Nunemaker Auditorium, Third Floor
Welcome Class of 2014! Join Dr. M.L. “Cissy” Petty, Vice President for Student Affairs and Associate Provost, as she
welcomes your family to Loyola University. There will also be a panel of Student Affairs professionals to answer
your questions about your student’s experience, and resources that will help him/her achieve his/her goals.

11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. LUNCH
Location: Danna Student Center
Student meal tickets are covered by the orientation registration fee. Parents are strongly encouraged to purchase
meal tickets at check-in.

1:15 - 2:00 p.m. FIRST YEAR SEMINARS
Location: Communications/Music Complex, Roussel Hall
Loyola’s comprehensive First-Year Experience initiative is designed to integrate students academically and socially
into the Loyola learning environment. The experience has enhanced student engagement and achievement and
features a number of programs and events that help students make connections between themes of the programs
and Loyola’s mission. Come learn more about this program from representatives of the First-Year Experience.

2:00 - 2:30 p.m. ENSURING A SMOOTH TRANSITION TO COLLEGIATE LIFE
Location: Communications/Music Complex, Roussel Hall
Transitioning to college can be a major adjustment for both students and parents. Attend this session to learn
about resources and services Loyola University offers you and your student.

2:45 - 3:15 p.m. STRENGTHSQUEST AND iLIVE AT LOYOLA
Location: Communications/Music Complex, Roussel Hall
Loyola University uses Strengths and values based interactions with your student throughout his/her time here.
Learn about this concept and how your student can capitalize on their strengths. This discussion will also focus on
student engagement, and how his/her values will be part of his/her development at Loyola.

3:30 - 5:00 p.m. PARENT RECEPTION
Location: Danna Student Center, Lower Level, Satchmo’s
Parents and family members are part of the Loyola community and we’d like to welcome you to campus too!
Parents will have the opportunity to mingle with other parents, alumni, and staff members at Satchmo’s. Light
refreshments will be provided.

5:00 - 9:00 p.m. DINNER ON YOUR OWN
Location: New Orleans
You and your student should take this time to enjoy the city known for it’s culture and great food! Krewe Leaders
and the Hospitality Table, located in the Danna Student Center, can make suggestions for you based on cuisine,
location, and price.

9:00 p.m. -12:00 a.m. LATE NIGHT @ LOYOLA
Location: Danna Student Center, St. Charles Room
Encourage your student to take advantage of Late Night @ Loyola, which will feature fun and entertaining skits
about transitioning to college life put on by the Krewe Leaders. There will be music and a student organization
fair . This is a great time for your student to meet new friends and find organizations to join their first year!

Day 2 - August 24, 2010

8:30 - 11:30 a.m. EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS
Parents can attend three of the four sessions provided. Each session will last 45 minutes beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Presentations will begin at 8:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
1. Mission and Ministry, Communications/Music Complex, Roussel Hall: Our Catholic, Jesuit heritage is an
important part of the education foundation at Loyola. The Office of Mission and Ministry will speak about its
unique programs available for students of all different faith traditions to explore and deepen their faith lives
both internally and externally through service to the community. Find out more about retreats, immersion
programs and other services offered.
2. Study Abroad, Monroe Hall, Nunemaker Auditorium, Third Floor: Join the more than 30% of Loyola students who
study abroad before they graduate. With programs in over 40 different countries, whether you want to go for
one month, a semester or a year, Loyola has the program for you!
3. First Generation College Students, Danna Student Center, Audubon Room: If your student is the first person in your
immediate family to attend college, this session will benefit you. Being in college for the first time is not an easy task
for a student or their family alike. We will discuss the challenges your student may face and the many resources
available on campus to support them.
4. University Counseling Center/Student Health Services, Danna Student Center, St. Charles Room: Join us for a
discussion about mental health and medical services available to Loyola students. Get your questions
answered about the student insurance policy, allergy injections, immunizations, hours of operation, the
counselor-on-call, and any questions you may have.

11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. LUNCH
Location: Danna Student Center

1:15 - 2:15 p.m. COLLEGE SESSIONS
Location: College of Business, Miller Hall, Room 114
College of Social Sciences, Bobet Hall, Room 332
College of Humanities and Natural Sciences, Monroe Hall, Nunemaker Auditorium, Third Floor
College of Music and Fine Arts, Communications/Music Complex, Room 230
During the assemblies, students and parents will learn about academic expectations, meet representatives from
your student’s college and have the opportunity to ask questions regarding your student’s academic experience.

2:30 - 4:15 p.m. EDUCATIONAL SESSION BLOCK II
Parents should rotate among the three sessions offered during this time. Each of the sessions will last 30 minutes
and will begin at 2:30 p.m., 3:05 p.m. and 3:40 p.m.
1. CAMPUS AND PUBLIC SAFETY, Danna Student Center, St. Charles Room: The Loyola University Police Department will
present information about how students can keep themselves safe at Loyola and in New Orleans. The campus police
will also answer questions regarding policies and procedures in place to protect students.
2. COMMUTER LIFE AND DINING, Danna Student Center, Octavia Room: During this session, representatives from the
Office of Co-Curricular Programs and the Student Government Association will discuss questions and concerns
regarding student life as a commuter. Representatives will also be present to speak about meal plan options. They will
also discuss programs and services designed to help your student be part of the university community.
3. FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS, Danna Student Center, Audubon Room: This session will cover information
regarding financial aid, tuition, billing and scholarships available at Loyola. There will also be time for question and
answer.
