Sociology alumnus secures funding for HIV prevention in Louisiana

Samuel Burgess ('98) coauthored two grant applications to the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which have been funded. The grants, totaling more than 2 million dollars, will fund HIV prevention efforts in Louisiana communities disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS.

Burgess is the CT Program Supervisor for the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals' HIV/AIDS Program (HAP). HAP coordinates a number of statewide and regional programs designed to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS, to ensure the availability of quality medical and social services for HIV infected and affected individuals, and to track the impact of the epidemic in Louisiana.
