The Department of Physics has a number of endowed scholarships offered based on the academic achievement and/or financial need. The scholarships are awarded yearly on a competitive basis. Students wishing to be considered should contact the Department Chair.

• Carl H. Brans Endowed Merit Scholarship in Physics. Dr. Carl H. Brans is a leading member of the faculty of the Department of Physics at Loyola University New Orleans and a renowned scholar in the field nationally and internationally. In recognition of his decades of teaching excellence, this endowed scholarship will be awarded to a student of physics and will perpetually honor the achievements of Dr. Brans.
  • Purpose: To promote excellence in the field of Physics by offering incentives to eligible, talented students.
  • Eligibility: The student must be either a sophomore, junior or senior, must be in good academic standing (GPA of 3.3 or higher) and must receive a recommendation from the Department of Physics, after filling out an application form supplied by the department.
• Rev. Francis A. Benedetto, S.J. and Rev. Karl A. Maring, S.J. Scholarship. This scholarship was established by the Physics Department in memory of two deceased faculty members - the Rev. Francis A. Benedetto, S.J. and the Rev. Karl A. Maring, S.J.
  • Purpose: To promote excellence in the field of Physics by offering incentives to talented students.
  • Eligibility: The recipient must demonstrate both academic worth and financial need.
• Otto F. Briede Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 1951 by a gift from Otto F. Briede, Jr. in memory of his father.
  • Purpose: To promote excellence in the field of Physics by offering incentives to talented students.
  • Eligibility: The recipient is to be a student majoring in Physics and must exhibit worthiness.
• Rev. A. Ransom Marlow, S.J. Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 2000 by a gift from Therese Marlow Walker in memory of her brother. Father Marlow taught in Loyola's Department of Physics for a number of years.
  • Purpose: To promote excellence in the field of Physics by offering incentives to talented students.  This is a honorific award, in addition to its financial value.
  • Eligibility: The recipient is to be a student majoring in physics and must exhibit worthiness.
• Lawrence J. Strohmeyer Scholarship. This scholarship was established in memory of Prof. Lawrence Strohmeyer, who taught in the Physics Department at Loyola University New Orleans for many years. THe fundraising efforts were led by Allard Villere, A'48, with additional contributions from Albert Baril, A'48, Gerald F. St.  Romaine, A'57, Mrs. Florence Strohmeyer, Malcolm J. Tuohy, A'48, and Stanley E. Wilson, A'49.
