Armin Kargol, Assoc. Professor of Physics, has received a grant from the National Science Foundation for collaborative research with Dr. Leszek Malkinski from Advanced Materials Research Institute at UNO. Their project, titled "Towards wireless nano-electrostimulation of ion channels in mammalian cells", is aimed at using nanoparticles made of multiferroic materials to remotely stimulate voltage-sensing biological macromolecules, such as voltage-gated ion channels. Dr. Malkinski's lab at UNO will design and manufacture nanopatterned electrodes and multiferroic nanoparticles while Dr. Kargol's lab at will conduct testing on ion channels expressed in mammalian cells.
