Members of the SMC faculty attended the Catholic Higher Education communication conference at Marquette University this past week. Drs. Yolanda Cal, Sonya Duhe, Cathy Rogers and Professor Valerie Andrews joined more than 85 faculty members from colleges and universities across the country at the three day conference themed "The Power to Transform the World."
Dr. Duhe spoke on her piece, "Reporting Controversial Science A Best Practice." Dr. Yolanda Cal presented her paper, "Vices & Virtues: The Role of Ethics in Advertising and Public Education" at a select session during the conference. Profess Andrews and Dr. Rogers delievered a presentation on their joint paper "The RFP Solution: One Response to Public Relations Client Service Learner Issues." Dr. Rogers also presented, "Social Justice, Public Relations and Service Learning in the Classroom Linked to Professionalism in the Workplace."
"The conference was a reaffirmation of the power of communication in making our world a better place. Through our work in the SMC at Loyola New Orleans, we are having a huge influence on finding solutions to the communication challenges that confront society today," said Dr. Duhe.
Each day of the conference had a special focus, including reflection on identity, ethics and the future. Faculty members discussed their work in light of the tradition, mission, and identity of their institutions. Keynote speakers included Dr. Janie Harden Fritz from Duquesne University, Dr. Clifford G. Christians from the University of Illinois and Dr. John Pauly from Marquette University. The conference also held panels and paper sessions so participants could discuss work on different campuses.
