Bob Thomas, Ph.D., director of Loyola University New Orleans Center for Environmental Communication, is passionate about nature and biology. And now he’s adding a new media platform to share that passion.
Thomas is co-host of the radio show “EnviroCommentary,” which focuses on environmental issues facing Louisiana. It will air the first Saturday of every month at 8:00 a.m. on WGSO 990 AM radio. Listeners will have the chance to call in with questions and comments.
The show is part of a series called "All Things Local," created and co-managed by Loyola School of Mass Communication alumnus Kevin Fitzwilliam '03. Loyola junior Raquel Derganz-Baker, exchange student Emmy Gustavson and sophomore Jose Garza are also serving as producers and interns for the show.
As the host, Thomas is well-versed in highlighting the importance of local environmental issues—a passion reflected in his work with Loyola’s Center for Environmental Communication, one of the few centers in the country dedicated to training students and others to effectively communicate today’s leading environmental issues.
In fact, Thomas has always been active in local environmental issues. When he’s not teaching in Loyola’s School of Mass Communication, he can also be seen leading local group nature walks as a part of the Louisiana Master Naturalists of Greater New Orleans, Inc. His new documentary exposing the tough lessons of the now-defunct Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (co-produced with e/Prime Media) recently debuted on public television station WYES.
Before Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005, Thomas hosted a weekly environment radio program called “The Environment Show,” on the same channel.
