The Social Justice Scholars unveiled their Freret Street History Project at a holiday party for seniors in the neighborhood in December 2009. Freshman and sophomore Social Justice Scholars who were enrolled in an Introductory Sociology Course worked with the Freret Neighborhood Center on this project which highlighted the commercial corrider of Freret Street in New Orleans, which was a struggling neighborhood in recent years and was hard hit by the floods after the levees failed during Hurricane Katrina. Students from across the United States worked with long-time residents of the neighborhood to create a wall display of "Freret in the 50s", which was a time when commercial establishments flourished in the neighborhood. The students interviewed the residents about their memories of that time, collected photographs and information about the neighborhood, and unveiled the display at a holiday party for neighborhood residents where they served the residents red beans and rice and jambalaya. This was a great learning experience for the Social Justice Scholars and a good time was had by all!
