SMC Partnership Wins Press Club Award

A partnership between Loyola School of Mass Communication students and a major news organization is bringing professional experience and awards to the SMC.

The Loyola Student News Service is a collaboration between SMC students and nola.com|The Times-Picayune.  Students write stories and shoot video and audio, which is then published on the newspaper’s multimedia platforms.  The student journalists cover community events throughout the New Orleans metro area.

Students also contributed to two long-term projects in 2015 through this collaboration. The “My Katrina Story” project focused on people throughout the region who shared stories of the days before, during and after Hurricane Katrina.  The stories ran once a week from February through August of 2015.  A second series focused on high school proms.  SMC students wrote stories about “prom-posals,” how to find good deals on dresses and beauty tips.

“The LSNS is a win-win for our students,” Dr. Sonya Duhé said.  “They gain professional experience, exposure to the community and material for their professional portfolio.”

In July of 2015, the Press Club of New Orleans honored the LSNS and nola.com|The Times-Picayune with its first place award for news partnerships.
