Alumna delivers powerful speech at Loyola

Laura Posada ’93, J.D. ’96, author and wife of New York Yankees All Star Jorge Posada, held a book signing and discussion on her recent book, The Beauty of Love: A Memoir of Miracles, Hope and Healing, last month on at the J. Edgar and Louise S. Monroe Library on Loyola University’s campus.

The book chronicles her family’s experience during their son’s battle with craniosynostosis, a severe cranial disorder. The disease, which affects 1 in every 2,000 births worldwide, restricts skull and brain growth, increasing the likelihood of brain damage.

"The sacrifices that Laura and Jorge endured for their son will resonate with parents everywhere. It's impossible to not be moved by ‘The Beauty of Love’," said Kelly Ripa, co-host of “Live with Regis and Kelly.”

During her speech, Posada expressed how much she appreciated her dynamic and stimulating education at Loyola after her rigid educational experience as a child.

“Laura’s passion for Loyola and love of family was very evident in her speech, “ said Dr. Sonya Duhe, director of the School of Mass Communication “She is a wonderful example of our graduates providing support to others during challenging times.”

The event was well attended by students and alumni as well as representatives from Children’s Hospital, who work with patients like Posada’s son.

The Posadas’ story, recently highlighted by President Obama, gained national attention and was featured in Parade Magazine. The couple started the Jorge Posada Foundation (named after their son Jorge, Jr.), which assists families in dealing with all aspects of the condition, serves to raise awareness of the condition and to support research and education of the condition.

All proceeds from the book will go to the Jorge Posada Foundation.
