Natural History Club hunts insects in Audubon Park

Loyola University New Orleans Biology and Environment professor Aimée K. Thomas and students in the Natural History Club spent Tuesday night at Audubon Park learning how to attract, collect and identify insects with Zack Lemann, Animal and Visitor Programs Manager at the Audubon Butterfly Garden Insectarium.  To do this, a mercury bulb and two UV lights were placed on two white sheets to attract insects.  We then collected them as they flew into the sheet, placed them in jars and looked at them using magnifying glasses.  Zack taught us about anatomy, natural history and characteristics that are used in identifying insects.  This informal learning environment allowed us to collect and identify more than 50 insects, spiders, amphibians and reptiles in a short period of time.  If you are interested in learning about other natural history events, like us on Facebook, Loyola New Orleans Natural History Club.
