Destiny Karash-Givens was given the environmental major for excellence in service award this year at Loyola’s Honors Convocation.
Destiny has been involved in all of these service activities during her time at Loyola. These activities have included:
1) Loyola Orientation Leader/Peer Involvement Coordinator wherein she helped plan and execute all aspects of new student orientation and peer involvement advising including acquainting new students and families with campus services, facilities, activities, and policies. She was also responsible for advertising and marketing the programs offered, conducting interviews, and presenting campus information to potential students and their families while giving them a tour;
2) Garden Program Coordinator Intern at Green Light New Orleans. During her service there, she organized groups of volunteers to build sustainable gardens for New Orleans residents. She also merged her two areas of interest (environment and teaching) as she educated residents and volunteers on the importance of sustainability and provided assistance as needed;
3) Extended Day Group Leader at Lycée Français de la Nouvelle-Orléans where she provided before and after school assistance to elementary-aged children.
4) She served as a mentor and provided in-home science and math tutoring for Jesuit High School Students through the Boys Hope Girls Hope program;
5) Volunteered with Anna’s Arts for kids by developing labs and teaching science lessons for kids from underprivileged groups;
6) She was the project leader for the garden program with Loyola University Community Action Program;
7) She served as event-programming member for Student Government Association Programming Board;
8) Served as an Ignacio volunteer, the Mission and Ministry international and domestic service immersion program; and
9) She participates in Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor society service events.
