The English Placement Test
Loyola's English Placement Test, given at each orientation session, is required of transfer students who have not taken any English composition courses and of entering freshmen who have not taken a national exam or whose scores on national exams are as follows:
• 20 and below on ACT Combined English/Writing
• 500 and below on SAT Writing
The English Placement Test will determine these students' placement, in English A100, A105, or T122.
English A100 is a three-credit course in writing fundamentals intended to better prepare students for T122, T125, and other college writing courses. English A105 is also a three-credit course in writing fundamentals, but one intended to meet the special needs of international students.
The English Placement Test consists of a grammar section and an essay. Students spend twenty (20) minutes completing a multiple-choice grammar section and thirty (30) minutes writing a brief essay on an assigned topic. The multiple-choice section will test for knowledge of correct grammar. The essay will test for writing competence, effectiveness, and development. In their essays, students should address the writing task, create a pattern of organization, develop the topic, and avoid grammatical errors. Students whose writing shows need for improvement in these areas will enroll in English A100 or A105. Students whose writing displays proficiency in these areas will enroll in English T122.
First Day Diagnostic Test
On the first day of class all students in English A100, A105, T122 will be given a diagnostic writing test. This test will be used to shape the instruction as well as to confirm the placement of students in these courses.
