About Stanislaw Makielski

Professor Emeritus S. J. Makielski, Jr. retired from the department in 1995 but still is on call to offer advice and assistance in matters of curriculum and planning. He was with the department from 1971 to his retirement and specialized in the areas of urban government, political leadership, American political institutions; Dr. Makielski was an early winner of Dux Academicus award, given yearly to an outstanding faculty member at Loyola. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1965.

In the Autumn of 2004, the Eta Epsilon Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha at Loyola University New Orleans decided to fund the Stanislaw Makielski Prize.

Purpose

The prize provides an incentive to political science students to engage in more thorough and in-depth topic research for their papers. This will, in turn, help foster a critical discussion on important political issues among students. The main objective is to encourage submission of well researched, firmly supported, and clearly organized essays in any field of political science; the secondary objectives are to identify prospective members, encourage wider student participation, and to promote the chapter within and without Loyola's campus.

Rules and Guidelines

The Stanislaw Makielski Prize will be awarded to three papers written by students enrolled in a political science course during each academic year, however exceptional papers written during the previous semester will be considered. The papers should be submitted to Ms. Wendy Porche, the department's administrative assistant, at wporche@loyno.edu.  The contest will be announced in meetings held by the Eta Epsilon Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha.  A panel consisting of faculty will judge all submissions and recommend three of them for the monetary awards. The monetary awards are $100, $75, $50 for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize respectively. Awards will be announced and distributed at Pi Sigma Alpha Eta Epsilon Chapter's recognition banquet at the end of the academic year.
