Carol Ann MacGregor joined the faculty of Loyola University New Orleans in 2012 after receiving her PhD in Sociology from Princeton University. Her research on, Catholic K-12 education, religious non-affiliation and religion and civic engagement has appeared in journals including American Catholic Studies,American Sociological Review, Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, and Social Science Research. Her papers have been awarded best article awards by the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion and the American Sociological Association section on Altruism, Morality, and Social Solidarity. She has been named as an Associate Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia.
She is currently completing two major book length projects. The first uses an extensive array of data to tell the story of why so many Catholic schools have closed since the 1960s and why that matters not just for people interested in the future of the church but for those interested in understanding how cultural and organizational change can exacerbate social inequalities. The second project, funded by a grant in partnership with the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia, focuses on the moral ecology and organizational practices of contemporary Catholic high schools and examines what schools are doing on the ground to prepare students for lives as citizens and neighbors.
She regularly teaches classes on Research Methods, Social Statistics, and courses related to education and inequality and particularly enjoys working with students on their capstone and thesis research projects. In 2015, she won the College of Social Science Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2017, she won the College of Arts and Science Award for Excellence in Advising, and in 2018 she won the University Senate Award for Excellence in Service. Among her university service she has served as the Chair of the Standing Committee on the Loyola Core, set institutional records for number of student awards won as Loyola’s National Fellowships Advisor, and worked on student retention as part of Project Magis. In Summer 2018, she will join Cohort 11 of the Ignatian Colleagues Program.
