INSTITUTE OF POLITICS (IOP)

Because of the tradition at Loyola which produces many of the political leaders of the area, the department has a special interest in developing leadership in urban and state politics -- particularly New Orleans and Louisiana politics. To this end, the Institute of Politics was established in 1967. It is an extension service to train people, mostly young professionals, in the realities of political life with a view toward encouraging them to become involved in the political process. The political science department nominates certain outstanding undergraduates to be associated fellows in the institute program. Today its fellows include public servants on the local, state, and federal levels.

For over thirty-five years, the IOP has worked to train young people interested in politics and political leadership in our regional area. Today, more than ever, we need to call forth folks whose vision includes a vibrant New Orleans and region, one in which our traditions meet with realities of life in post-Katrina south Louisiana -- people who have the talent and willingness to make a difference in the political process and take on the leadership roles which are so needed as we rebuild New Orleans.  Please pass the word.

Graduation

We are delighted to have just graduated our first post-Katrina class of IOP Fellows, the Class of 2007.  An energetic and vibrant group, they were just what we needed to get the program back on track.  We are grateful to them for their enthusiasm for the political process and for the future of our area.  They also displayed a great enthusiasm for each other - one of the most social groups we've seen in years.  Several candidates have emerged from the group and we wish them the best of luck in the upcoming round of elections.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Tiffany Chase, IOP '01, who was recently elected Judge in New Orleans' Civil District Court.
