Dr. Constance Mui, Rev. Scott Youree Watson, S.J., Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences, Professor of Philosophy, received the College of Arts & Sciences 2023 Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Mui has a long record of success in teaching and mentoring students. In recent years she has, along with her normal teaching duties, mentored a Fulbright scholar, directed multiple honors theses. Also, a former student, Jared Schoch ‘97, created an endowment for the Philosophy Department in honor of her teaching.
This endowment was established in 2021 by Jared, Communications ’97, and Elaine Schoch in honor of two professors who had a profound effect on Jared and countless other students through the study of philosophy. Dr. Constance Mui has served as a professor of philosophy at Loyola since 1987. She specializes in continental philosophy, and has published edited volumes on Jean-Paul Sartre and feminist theories, as well as articles and book chapters on phenomenology, Sartre, Beauvoir, Marcel, Laruelle, Malabou, Stiegler, Derrida, and Dufourmantelle. Dr. Joseph Berendzen, Professor of Philosophy, published the book Embodied Idealism: Merleau-Ponty's Transcendental Philosophy with Oxford University Press in June 2023. The book presents a new interpretation of French philosopher Merleau-Ponty's early works.
Zach Dowling, who received his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Loyola University New Orleans in 2021, has received a Fulbright Fellowship.
The History and Philosophy Departments joined together to hold an awards ceremony for students in the department. Students Jesse Coleman, Allyssa Edwards, Franco Fuenes, Henry Glick, Delaney Harper, Jesse LeBouef, and Joeseph Pitre were awarded for their excellence as students, writers, and leaders. Faculty from both departments came together with friends and family of the awardees to express their support for the students.
Dr. Mark Gossiaux, Professor of Philosophy, received the College of Arts & Sciences 2022 Excellence in Research Award. A noted scholar of late medieval philosophy, Dr. Gossiaux was recognized for his 2021 article, "James of Viterbo on Seminal Reasons as inchoationes formarum" which was published in Vivarium, one of the leading journals in the world for the study of medieval philosophy and widely recognized as an unrivaled resource for the history of logic, semantics, epistemology, and metaphysics.
Professor Everett Fulmer presented at a panel about mob violence in the US Capitol. Dr. Fulmer discussed the role of social media in the insurrection. Other members of the panels included Loyola University Professors Mitchell Crusto, John Lovett, Isabel Media, and Justin Nystrom.
Many recent department graduates are continuing their work in philosophy this fall.

Ethics Bowl alumna Laura Cordell graduated from the University of Miami's School of Law in 2019 as an Annual Merit Scholar. Laura plans on specializing in immigration law.
Congratulations to Melody Bigelow-Monssen, who has been awarded a full scholarship to the London School of Economics, for a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice Policy. Melody graduated in May 2019 with a BA in Philosophy, Politics, and Social Justice, and a BA in Criminal Justice.
