Dr. Villarreal was a student at Loyola University New Orleans from 1976 to 1980. After receiving her Ph.D. from Tulane, she taught at Loyola University from 1991 to 1995. She then taught at various Louisiana universities, and has returned to teach at Loyola in 2011. Her field of research is topology, specifically continuum theory. She has published papers in Transactions of the American Mathematical Society and Topology Proceedings, and has spoken frequently at the Annual Spring Topology and Dynamical Systems Conferences. Her favorite course to teach is Calculus I.
