About Classical Studies

Real Courses.  Real Preparation. Real Careers.

Classical Studies at Loyola offers students many opportunities for learning about and exploring the legacy of ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, and for starting careers in Classics or related fields.

While at Loyola, students majoring or minoring in Classical Studies or Classical Civilizations have opportunities to participate in archaeological field schools, and to participate in regional and national conferences.  Latin majors can follow a special degree plan that prepares them to apply for teacher certification. These activities, along with one-on-one advising from instructors, help students to shape their future career plans and to succeed once they have graduated from Loyola.

In terms of instruction and coursework, the department offers courses in ancient Greek and Latin at all levels and across all genres of prose and poetry. Many courses also explore the mythology, literature, and culture of the ancient world through English translations of Homer, Vergil, Plato, and many others.  Courses in art and archaeology provide a strong background in the milestones of material culture and artistic movements in the ancient world.  Many classes offered by the department are taught as seminars with a low student to teacher ratio, allowing for individuated attention and instruction. In addition, many of the courses offered by Classical Studies fulfill Loyola Core  or Common Curriculum requirements (including the language requirement for students who started in the Fall of 2015 or earlier!)
