Achievements

Dr. Paul W. Barnes, J.H. Mullahy Endowed Chair in Environmental Biology, and Dr. Susanne Neugart, Postdoctoral Researcher in Biology, recently attended a network meeting of the International Association of Plant UV Research (UV4Plants) held in Bled, Slovenia from April 15-18.  Scientists and students from 20 countries (mostly in Europe) attended this conference to learn about recent research aimed at better understanding how ultraviolet radiation in sunlight influences plants and ecosystems.  Dr.

Late Nights at Loyola was awarded Outstanding Student Program 2017-18.  This award is given in recognition of outstanding student leadership in the successful implementation of one time or repeated campus programming that promotes the mission of Loyola University New Orleans.

Loyola's Pre-eminent Undergraduate Research Event

The Department of Biological Sciences hosted its 28th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium on Friday, April 13, 2018 from 1:15 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the Loyola University New Orleans main campus in Nunemaker Auditorium, located on the 3rd floor in Monroe Hall. A crawfish social immediately followed the symposium in front of Monroe Hall.

Dr. Kim Mix and her research students, Kate Birdwhistell (Chemistry ’15), Cullen Lilley (Biology and Music ’17), and Andrea Alarcon Uquillas (Biology ’17), attended the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) annual meeting in New Orleans on March 10-13, 2018.

Dr. Paul W. Barnes, J.H. Mullahy Endowed Chair in Environmental Biology, recently attended a meeting of the UNEP Environmental Effects Assessment Panel in Malaga, Spain from February 13-21, 2018 to prepare a quadrennial report on the environmental effects of ozone depletion and climate change.  Dr. Barnes is a co-lead author in the terrestrial ecosystems working group which includes 6 other authors.  A draft report was produced at the meeting in Malaga with a final report to be prepared at a follow-up meeting in Vermont in September.  While at the meeting Dr.

Michael Pashkevich, a biology graduate of 2017, was awarded the Gates Cambridge scholarship to Cambridge for his ongoing research on spiders and arachnids. He told us he owes much to Loyola's education and values. See full article here.
